A Lawyer’s Reaction To Being Diagnosed With Advanced Colon Cancer

One day that will always be in my memory is the day I learnedAs an attorney I had worked on lawsuits involving the delayed diagnosis of cancer. Even so, this experience had not prepared me for listening to those words applied to me. By having worked as a delayed diagnosis of cancer lawyer and knew the symptoms of various different types of cancers, including advanced colon cancer I did not hesitate when I began to experience symptoms myself. I saw my primary care physician who advised that while I was too young for regular screening for colon cancer and regardless that I had no family history of colon cancer (at the time) that I ought to nonetheless undergo a colonoscopy to eliminate cancer as the reason for my symptoms.

The colonoscopy found that I had a substantial cancerous tumor and surgery confirmed that it had already begun spreading. The cancer was stage 3 colon cancer. Bad news. And I had an instant of genuine fear and doubt when I was given the news. I knew that my odds of long term survival were just about even. I still believed I was going to die.

Although I required several weeks to recover from surgery and while there were days during the chemotherapy that I just did not feel well enough to do anything, I was, by and large, able to continue working. This gave me great pleasure. I felt that I was able to carry my weight and lead pretty much a regular life throughout my treatment. Seven years after my treatment I present with no evidence of cancer. If I had waited even just a number of months the cancer could have spread further and I in all likelihood would have lost the battle against this dreadful disase.

Clearly, should you have symptoms suggestive of colon cancer getting the correct test immediately might save your life. The best way to give oneself the maximum treatment options and the greatest chance of surviving the cancer is to detect and treat it early.
